General Information

The 14th Annual NMU Jazz Festival will be held on the beautiful campus of Northern Michigan University, Friday, April 16, 2010.  High school and middle school jazz bands and combos in the region are invited to participate. There is a $200 entry fee for each participating ensemble (additional ensembles from the same school can register for $75). Space is limited.  The registration deadline is March 8, 2010.  Registration materials are available below

This year's event will feature vocalist Kevin Mahogany, who has established a tremendous reputation as both a performer and educator since he first appeared on the jazz scene in the early 1990's.  Newsweek describes him as "...the standout jazz vocalist of his generation."  Noted jazz writer Whitney Balliet claims, "There is little Mahogany cannot do." And according to the L.A. Times, "Mahogany is one of the first truly gifted male vocalists to emerge in years."  For additional information about Kevin Mahogany, please visit his website: http://www.mahoganyjazzrecords.com/KevinMahogany.html  We are very pleased that he will be joining us for the NMU Jazz Festival this year in Marquette!

The evening concert featuring Kevin Mahogany with the NMU Jazz Band is sponsored by the Northern Michigan University Music Department, NMU Friends of Jazz, and the NMU College of Arts and Sciences.

High School and Middle School Band Performances

Registered high school and middle school ensembles will perform in 20 minute time slots and will then participate in a 15 - 20 minute clinic with a clinician/adjudicator.  Three adjudicators will hear every big band performance and will provide written and/or recorded feedback.  Two adjudicators will provide written and/or recorded feedback for every combo performance.  Click HERE to see the 2009 list of participating school ensembles.  Click HERE to see the 2009 list of adjudicators/clinicians.

Open Jazz Jam Session

An early afternoon luncheon will feature performances by NMU combos, and the always-popular jam session for all participants. This event will be held in the Wildcat Den (one of the University cafeterias), and students will want to bring $7.50 in order to enjoy the "all-you-can-eat" buffet.  Traditionally, the jam session is where emerging jazz artists congregated to try out new ideas and work at perfecting the craft of improvisation. This session will be offered in that spirit and will provide students an opportunity to practice improvisation and listen to others. All students are encouraged to participate.
