Jazz Combos at NMU (MU118) are composed of music majors and non-majors who are selected through competitive auditions at the beginning of each semester. These ensembles are designed to help students develop the basic skills required to interpret and perform jazz in a small group setting. Sight reading is emphasized in rehearsals, and historical and theoretical concepts are frequently discussed. Students are also exposed to the necessary tools for practicing jazz improvisation, including: listening, transcription, practice techniques, computer-assisted software, etc. Various combos are often featured with guest artists at the annual NMU Jazz Festival.
