The NMU Jazz Band (MU 117, 0.5 cr., fall/winter) is a standard big band that performs many concerts throughout the school year and has toured Michigan's Upper Peninsula as well as Wisconsin. The ensemble performs literature by Thad Jones, Maria Schneider, Duke Ellington, Bob Brookmeyer, Sammy Nestico, and other well-known jazz composers. This group is the featured ensemble at the yearly NMU Jazz Festival, and has performed with the following artists in recent years: bassist Jeff Halsey, trumpeters Clark Terry, Jon Faddis, and Kelly Rossum; saxophonists James Moody and Bob Mintzer, trombonists John Fedchock and Steve Turre; pianist Jim McNeely, drummer Peter Erskine, and guitarist Mike Stern. The NMU Jazz Band is open to music majors and non-majors selected through competitive auditions at the beginning of each semester.
