Fall 2009 Jazz Auditions will be held on

Tuesday, August 25, in the NMU Band Room – TFA 252

from 5:00pm-7:00pm & from 8:00pm-10:00pm

Audition Requirements

 

Rhythm Section Players (Piano, Guitar, Vibes, Bass, and Drums)

**Amps, vibes, and a drumset will be provided.  Please bring your own cables, sticks, etc.**

  • Scales:  All major, dorian, and mixolydian scales (I will ask to hear 3 or 4 of these).  Scales should be played in eighth notes at a minimum tempo of quarter note=100.  Please note: In lieu of scales, drummers will be asked to demonstrate their knowledge of a variety of styles.

  • Prepared excerpt - PDF files can be accessed and printed by clicking on the following links.

Piano

  • Sight-reading and/or improvisation

     

Saxes, Trumpets, Trombones (Other instruments? - Please contact Dr. Flaherty.)

  • Scales:  Two octave chromatic scale + all major, dorian, and mixolydian scales (I will ask to hear 3 or 4 of these).  Scales should be played in eighth notes at a minimum tempo of quarter note=100.

Vocalists

  • You will be expected to perform Duke Ellington's I Let a Song Go Out of My Heart (I will provide recorded accompaniment in the key and tempo of your choice).  A lead sheet for I Let a Song Go Out of My Heart (a PDF file) can be accessed and printed by clicking on the following link:  Vocal Audition Music.  You will also be asked to improvise (scat) for one chorus of this tune.
