BI 495: Field Studies of Zambia

We will begin taking applications again for this course in Fall of 2008. Please consider visiting The Blog made by the class from 2007 for personal stories and updates!!!
Leaders of the Course/Trip

Dr. Alec Lindsay

This CLEA to Zambia will be led by Dr. Alec Lindsay - an NMU biologist with extensive field experience, including some in Zambia. Dr. Lindsay traveled to Zambia in the summer of 2005 scouting sites with the intention of returning with NMU students in subsequent years to participate in field studies and biotic surveys. His research focuses on conservation genetics of birds and mammals.

Dr. Jackie Bird

Dr. Jackie Bird will also be accompanying this trip as a co-leader - a secondary contact for students for logistics, advice and scientific insight. A parasitologist by training, Dr. Bird is particularly interested in ticks and the diseases they transmit.

This is the end of Jake's third year at Northern. He is Zoology major with an increasing interest in aquatic ecology, most specifically in regards to Molluscs. While in Zambia he hopes to play with the giant African snails, and do research on mussel reproduction.
Anne Bruce
Annie is a 4th Year Zoology Major originally from Arnold, MI. She is interested in ethology and hopes to one day use animal behavior studies to help enrich the lives of animals in zoos. Annie hopes to observe antelope stotting and study hippo communication while in Zambia.
Michaela Erickson
At 25 Kala (the one without the hat) is the oldest student of the group (a self-proclaimed "born-again student") working on her second degree in diagnostic genetics. She hopes to study bird communication on her jaunt across Zambia. Originally from Rochester, MN, she now calls the UP home with her husband, Adam.
Julian Dupuis
Julian is a junior biology major from Holland, Michigan. He plans on studying aquatic ecology and entomology, and also has a budding interest in chemical ecology. Julian hopes to identify insects in Zambia, and broaden his knowledge of class Hexapoda.
Nicholas Gray
Nick is currently a sophomore majoring in Ecology with a minor in Earth Science. He is interested in wildlife management and birds. While In Zambia he intends to work on the behavioral analysis of birds, perhaps bee-eaters. Also in Zambia he hopes to find a male Pennant-Winged Nightjar and a Malachite Kingfisher.
Constance Johnson
Constance hails from Livonia, MI, but reports to have fallen in love with the great north, so the UP may be her real home. She is a Junior double majoring in environmental science and ceramics, so far. She loves animals and the environment and plans to study large mammals and their interactions with the environment and each other while in the Zambian wilderness.
Jessica Kustin
Jessica is a junior Zoology major from Anchorage, Alaska. She is hoping to attend naturopathic medical school in Oregon after graduation. Jessica plans to identify and study insects and flora while in Zambia.
Bree Prehn
Bree is a freshman zoology major from Sawyer, Michigan. She would like to study mammalian vocalizations while in Zambia.
Jessica Roberts
Jessica is a Senior Zoology Major originally from Arnold, MI. She is interested in veterinary medicine and hopes to one day open her own practice in the UP. Jessica hopes to find and study the local ticks of Zambia.
Anne Scott
Anne is a first year Zoology major originally from Algonquin, Illinois (NW suburb of Chicago). She is interested in large exotic mammals and ecology. While in Zambia, Anne hopes to study the morphological and behavioral characteristics of primates.
Katherine Stamerjohn
Katie is a third year Biology-Physiology major originally from Oconomowoc, Wisconsin (between Milwaukee and Madison). Her future plans change quite frequently, but as of now she plans to go to med school in the area of psychiatrics. She is also interested in ecology, so this Zambia trip may swing her in a whole new direction. Katie hopes to study small mammals in Zambia.
Darren Wagner
Darren is a junior microbiology major from Long Grove Illinois. He has an interest in Herpetology and while in Zambia he hopes to identify and study snakes, lizards (hopefully some Monitor lizards) and their habitats.
Allan Veler
Allan is a Senior from Sault Ste. Marie, MI. He is currently a Zoology major and will be graduating this May. While in Zambia, he would like to study the way ungulates respond to predators. After he returns home, he will be taking an internship in Kenai, Alaska with the Cook Inlet Aquaculture Association.
