Advice and Instructions for my
Advisees
This page is meant to be a clearing house
for my advisees. If you have me (Dr. Lindsay) as an academic
advisor, here are some hints, tips and materials to make our
advising meetings go smoothly and efficiently, hopefully
assisting to speed you on your
way.
First, if you have questions about your studies, your academic path, your career goals or about nearly anything, please feel free to schedule a time to come meet with me. You can always drop me an email and then I can see what I can do to assist.
As far as advice for classes and registration go, here is what to do:
- From the table below, find the Major + Bulletin combination that is right for you. Then right click on the "Advising Sheet" link to the right of that, and then select "Save As." You will then be able to save that advising sheet to your computer. Save it somewhere safe, and change the first part of the filename to your last name. The Advising Sheet is a MS Word 'form' that allows you to fill in sections with drop down boxes, etc. By filling it in and saving it electronically you can continue to update it over the coming years. Handy!
- Now that you have downloaded that file, you can use the bulletin (use the correct one! that is, the one from the year in which you began your studies at Northern) and your transcript (there is only one you can access through my.nmu.edu), you can start to figure out which requirements you have already fulfilled, and which requirements you still need to address.
Now, to schedule a meeting time with me for class advising, you need to send me an email with the following:
- A request for a half-hour meeting time. During advising weeks you will see a table pasted at the bottom of this page, and you will be able to see what times I am available over those two weeks.
- Your updated advising sheets attached to the email so I can look them over.
- A list of the courses you are planning to take, and those which would be options if your first choices don't work out.
I will then email you back with a time to meet and we can chat about the amazing future that lies before you. We can also chat about your annoying roommate, or the Packers, if you like.
